28th Avenue is a 10-block retail strip from SE Stark to NE Glisan. Bright spots in this area include the Laurelhurst Theater, which is where I go to enjoy second run movies (that I missed when they were at one of the big chain theaters) or indy films. Grab a slice of pizza, a glass of wine and relax in one of their cozy viewing halls. At SE Burnside and 29th, you will find a Whole Foods grocery store for convenient shopping. Try out the Japanese restaurant, Masu East, at Pine. Masu East and Ken's Artisan PizzaDo call ahead (503-232-5255), though.  There is usually a wait during dining hours. 28th Avenue has the usual spread of restaurants. You can choose from Chinese, Cuban, Japanese, Mexican, Italian, Pizza and an assortment of cafés. 28th is also getting a new anchor at Burnside, sharing the corner with the Laurelhurst Theater, a second hand dress shop and Starbucks. Construction is already under way on the 32-unit SunRose retail/residential condo complex. The design is said to be “forward thinking.” I’m excited to see what they’ve come up with.
